Strossmayer’s Park, Split

Strossmayer’s Park, Split

Strossmayer's Park, nestled between the two bastions, remnants of the ancient Venetian fortification, holds a cherished place in the heart of Split. Located to the north of the Diocletian Palace, adjacent to its main entrance - The Golden Gate, the park has been a significant part of the city's history and cultural heritage.

The park is named after the esteemed Croatian Catholic bishop, theologian, and patron, whose legacy remains cherished. It was officially named Strossmayer Park after his passing in 1905, honoring his contributions to the city and country.

The origins of Strossmayer Park trace back to the 18th century when efforts began to develop a free urban space to the south of the fortress. However, it was in 1859 that the area truly took on the role of the main city garden. Over the years, the park evolved and underwent various changes that enriched its ambiance.

A notable addition to the park's beauty came in the mid-20th century with the installation of a stunning fountain adorned with a figurative sculpture known as the "Putto," which resembles an angel. This fountain quickly became a focal point of the park, captivating the admiration of both locals and visitors.

In 2002, the park underwent a significant renovation that culminated in its present-day appearance. The surrounding walls of the park are now adorned with the heartfelt verses of a celebrated Croatian poet, Tin Ujević, immortalizing his words for all to appreciate.
