City Museum of Split, Split

City Museum of Split, Split

The museum begins with a Palace. Within a cluster of medieval buildings bounded by Diocletian's ancient walls is the Gothic Papalic family palace. The Papalic family emigrated to Split in the 1300s. They prospered and built their home, one of the most compelling historical monuments in Split. These days it houses the City Museum of Split.

The heart of the museum is Dmine Papalic's collection of ancient monuments from the ruins of Salona. The collection has been added to over the years. Besides the Salona collection there are now paintings, sculpture fragments, and statues saved from buildings in Split. There are also documents, photos, and charts relating to the city's heritage.

The City Museum was opened in 1946. The director was Marko Uvodic, a short story writer and local historian. An important cultural and historical exhibition was opened in 1950 on the grand floor of the Papalic home. After the exhibition closed, the space was ceded to the museum. In 1992 the museum achieved a complete permanent collection.
