Šulić Beach, Dubrovnik

Šulić Beach, Dubrovnik

Nestled quietly between Gradac Park and the imposing ramparts of Fort Lovrijenac to the west of Dubrovnik’s Old Town lies Sulic Beach. Though it is only a few minutes’ walk from the iconic Pile Gate, this small pebble-and-concrete cove feels tucked away from the bustle of the city. Access is via a narrow stone staircase carved into the cliff, so the sense of discovery and separation from the crowds is immediate and refreshing.

Sulic Beach has deep local roots, with a history stretching back to the days of the Republic of Ragusa. During that era, the cliffs of the inlet housed workshops hewn into stone, and later in the 19th century, the Sulic family acquired the land, turning the inlet into a bathing complex. Over time, the family added laid-out concrete sun decks, walls, and stone platforms, shaping the site into one of Dubrovnik’s oldest public swimming spots-yet still retaining its tucked-away, peaceful atmosphere.

Today, Sulic is a narrow, rocky shore framed by sheer limestone cliffs, which provide welcome natural shade from the summer sun and keep the water cooler and more tranquil than many busier beaches in the area. The beach surface is largely pebbles, but concrete slabs and flat rock platforms line parts of the shore, often equipped with ladders for easier access into the sea. Snorkeling is a favorite pastime here thanks to the calm, clear waters; adventurous visitors may also spot people cliff-jumping off ledges or concrete vantage points (though no lifeguards are on duty, so caution is advised).

Though modest in size, Sulic Beach provides essential amenities: showers and public toilets are located above the cove, and perched on the cliffs just above are two bars/restaurants-Dodo Beach Bar and Ala Mizerija-offering refreshments, light meals, and a relaxing outlook over the inlet.
