Synetic Theater, Arlington
Synetic Theater is a professional performing-arts company known for combining physical theater, dance, pantomime, acrobatics, music, and visual design. Founded in 2001 by Georgian artists Paata and Irina Tsikurishvili, the company developed a distinctive style that uses movement and imagery to reinterpret familiar stories.
Its repertoire includes original productions and adaptations of Shakespeare, mythology, novels, and other classic works. Some performances are entirely wordless, while others incorporate spoken dialogue, music, or film. Productions use choreography, expressive movement, costumes, lighting, projections, stage combat, and original music to communicate character and narrative. Synetic is particularly associated with wordless Shakespeare adaptations such as Hamlet…the rest is silence and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The company has received numerous Helen Hayes Awards and nominations, and its founders were named Washingtonians of the Year in 2013. After closing its long-term Crystal City theater facility at the end of April 2024, Synetic transitioned to a mobile model, partnering with various regional venues. Recent and ongoing productions for its 2026/2027 season are presented at the Thomas Jefferson Theatre, Olney Theatre Center, and other regional stages.
Education remains an important part of Synetic’s work. Programs include classes and camps in acting, dance, movement, pantomime, acrobatics, stage combat, and physical storytelling. Its Youth Ensemble and Teen Company provide longer-term training that ends with fully staged performances, while workshops and school residencies introduce students to physical-theater techniques. Visitors should check the current calendar and venue before attending, since performance locations and schedules vary throughout the season.
