Virginia Highlands Park, Arlington

Virginia Highlands Park is a nearly 20-acre public recreation area with athletic facilities, play spaces, picnic amenities, and open areas for visitors of different ages. The park includes both natural-grass and synthetic rectangular fields, two lighted diamond fields, paved paths, and landscaped sections used for exercise and informal recreation. Its location near public transportation and surrounding residential and commercial areas makes it a convenient outdoor stop for local residents and visitors.

The park’s sports facilities include six lighted tennis courts, two tennis practice walls, two pickleball courts, two lighted basketball courts, a volleyball court, and three pétanque courts. Visitors will also find a playground, picnic tables, a reservable picnic shelter, charcoal grills, restrooms, a gazebo, drinking fountains, and an interim dog run. During the warmer months, the seasonal sprayground provides water play for children and operates according to a separate schedule. The park does not contain an outdoor swimming-pool complex, so the original reference to swimming pools should be replaced with the documented sprayground. Virginia Highlands Park also contains the Highlands Urban Garden, a community-managed space demonstrating urban agriculture. Athletic fields, courts, and the picnic shelter may be reserved, and permitted activities take priority in some areas.

The grounds support organized sports, walking, children’s play, dog exercise, picnics, and occasional community events, but programs vary throughout the year. Visitors should check current field reservations, maintenance notices, and seasonal sprayground hours before arriving.
