Gravelly Point Park, Arlington

Gravelly Point Park, Arlington

Gravelly Point Park is a popular spot for weekend visitors, attracting boaters, cyclists, and especially airplane-spotters due to its proximity to the airport's runway. This unique location allows visitors to experience aircraft up close as they take off and land.

The area has historical significance, originally housing Abingdon, a home built by Captain John Alexander in 1746. Later owned by John Parke Custis, the adopted stepson of President George Washington, Abingdon was the birthplace of Eleanor Parke Custis, Washington's granddaughter. Although the house was destroyed by fire in 1930, the site has been preserved, with artifacts displayed in an exhibit at the airport's Terminal A.
