Teloglion Foundation of Art, Thessaloniki

Teloglion Foundation of Art, Thessaloniki

The Teloglion Fine Arts Foundation is a significant cultural institution in Thessaloniki. Established in 1972, it owes its existence to Nestor and Aliki Telloglou, a generous Greek couple who donated their extensive art collection and estate to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Named after them, the Foundation not only houses artworks but also embodies a spirit of philanthropy aimed at enriching the local community and promoting the arts.

Located in a modern and architecturally notable building, the Teloglion Foundation offers stunning views of the Thermaic Gulf and Mount Olympus. Situated in a lush park on the outskirts of the Aristotle University campus, its setting adds to its allure as a cultural destination. The building itself is designed to meet high standards, providing an appropriate setting for the valuable artworks it contains.

The Foundation boasts a vast and impressive collection of over 7,000 pieces, showcasing the evolution of modern Greek art from the nineteenth century to the present day. It highlights the contributions of renowned artists from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with a focus on the development of abstraction in Greece and the works of painters from Northern Greece. This extensive collection includes twentieth-century prints and smaller collections of sculpture, antiquities, Far Eastern art, ceramics, glass, and textiles. Continuously expanding, the collection grows through new donations, ensuring its relevance and richness for future generations.

One of its notable assets is the Library and Spiteri Archive, generously donated by Tonis and Ioanna Spiteri. This archive is a valuable research resource, covering Greek and European art, particularly the Parisian art scene from 1945 to 1980. Other significant contributions include the Giorgos Mourelos Archive and the Marinos Kalligas Library, enhancing the Foundation's scholarly resources.
