The Church of St. Mary, Bonn

The Church of Saint Mary is a Neo-Gothic parish church, designed by Joseph Prill-a local teacher. The church was built between 1887 and 1892, and consecrated by Cardinal Fischer in November 1892. It was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary and All Saints, and is recognized as one of Bonn’s most stylistically pure Neo-Gothic buildings.

The church features a façade with a 77-metre spire, flanked by two side aisles and a polygonal choir. Brickwork in warm tones, pointed arches, and intricate tracery on large windows contribute to its Gothic Revival character. Inside, visitors are greeted by tall columns leading up to rib-vaulted ceilings.

One highlight is the church’s impressive organ collection. The main organ, built by the renowned Johannes Klais workshop in 1897 and modernized in the mid-20th century, features 26 registers on two manuals and pedal. Also notable is the historic choir organ-a loan from Klais since 2010-an original mechanico-pneumatic instrument with five registers, valued as the only surviving example of its kind.

Visitors will also find a range of artistic treasures inside: altars dating from 1891–93, six figurative stained-glass windows by the Cologne Lindenthal studios Schneider & Schmolz, a Gothic Pietà from around 1300 donated by artist Paul Kemp, and an original neo-Gothic pulpit.
