The Horse, Dog and Pigeon Statues, Tokyo

Japanese culture is characterized by a deep respect for the world around them, which extends to their appreciation for animals during times of war. This reverence is exemplified through the creation of statues dedicated to animals that played crucial roles and displayed unwavering loyalty during wartime. These statues, crafted from bronze and life-sized, were donated at various points in the latter half of the 20th century.

The first of these tributes, a horse statue, found its place at the Yasukuni Shrine in 1958, serving as a commemoration of the horses that served alongside the Japanese military. In 1982, another statue was unveiled, portraying a pigeon perched on a globe, symbolizing the invaluable role of homing pigeons in military operations. Lastly, in March 1992, a German shepherd statue was donated, honoring the canine companions of soldiers who demonstrated remarkable devotion and support during times of conflict. These statues stand as enduring symbols of Japan's respect for the contributions and faithfulness of these animals during war periods.
