The Pit, Minsk
The Pit, or “Yama” in Belarusian, stands as one of Minsk’s most poignant memorials to the Holocaust. Located in the former Minsk Ghetto area, it commemorates the mass execution of more than 5,000 Jews who were murdered here on March 2, 1942, during the Nazi occupation. The memorial occupies the exact site of the atrocity, making it a place of deep historical and emotional significance. It was among the first Holocaust memorials in the Soviet Union, first marked in 1947 with a simple obelisk that carried an inscription in Yiddish — a rare acknowledgment of Jewish suffering at the time.
In 2000, the site was expanded into a larger commemorative ensemble designed by Leonid Levin and sculptor Elsa Pollak. The most striking feature is the bronze sculpture “The Last Way,” depicting a group of victims descending the slope toward the pit, their faces frozen in fear, resignation, and dignity. This powerful piece captures the gravity of the tragedy with moving realism, evoking a moment suspended between life and death.
Surrounding the sculpture, granite steps and inscriptions in several languages create a contemplative space for reflection. Each element was designed to preserve the memory of the victims while inviting visitors to confront the enormity of what occurred. Today, the Pit functions as both a memorial and an outdoor historical site, frequently visited by locals, descendants of survivors, and travelers seeking to understand Minsk’s wartime history. Quiet and somber, it remains a vital reminder of humanity’s capacity for remembrance and empathy.
