The Sapumal Foundation, Colombo

The Sapumal Foundation, Colombo

The Sapumal Foundation is a small art space set inside the former home and studio of Harry Pieris. The house dates from the early 20th century and still feels like a private residence rather than a museum. Thick walls, wooden details, and a quiet garden create a calm setting that feels separate from the busy surroundings. The scale is small, which makes the visit relaxed and easy to manage.

The foundation is closely linked to the 43 Group, a modern art group formed in 1943. Harry Pieris was one of its founding members and served as its secretary for many years. The artworks on display reflect this period, showing how artists began to move away from traditional academic painting. The collection includes works by Pieris and other artists connected to the group, including George Keyt, whose paintings use strong lines and themes drawn from local stories and daily life.

The rooms are arranged in a simple way, with natural light and short labels instead of long explanations. This makes the space easy to follow even without art knowledge. The collection is small and well spaced, and the foundation is usually quiet. Opening hours can be limited, so checking ahead is recommended.
