The Zoo, Brisbane

The Zoo, Brisbane

The Zoo has served as Brisbane's hub for live music since 1992. It ranks among Australia's longest-standing live music venues, welcoming both international and national touring acts while also spotlighting local talent on a regular basis. Over the years, the venue has hosted some of the world's most renowned musicians, such as Nick Cave, Powderfinger, Violent Soho, Lorde, and The Pixies.

Situated on the first floor of the Shannon's Building on Ann Street, right in the heart of Brisbane's Fortitude Valley, The Zoo occupies a space with a rich history. Originally constructed in the 1920s by the celebrated Brisbane architect E.P. Trewern, the building was initially designed to include four residential apartments on the first floor. However, those apartments were never built, and instead, a sizable warehouse area was created.

In 1992, Curran & Smith, the founders of The Zoo, transformed the first floor of 711 Ann Street into the iconic music venue we know today. They painstakingly built the venue from the ground up, nurturing the burgeoning live music scene in Brisbane. In doing so, they provided an essential platform for touring artists and local musicians alike.

Curran & Smith's contributions fundamentally changed the live music landscape in Brisbane, leaving an enduring legacy that is continued by the current owner, Shane Chidgzey.
