Thomas Boulsover Monument, Sheffield

The Thomas Boulsover Monument in Sheffield commemorates the life and achievements of Thomas Boulsover (1705 – 1788), a significant figure in the city’s industrial history. Boulsover, a skilled cutler, is renowned for his invention of the Sheffield Plate-a technique that allowed silver to be fused onto copper, creating a material that resembled pure silver but was much more affordable. This discovery, which occurred accidentally in 1743 while Boulsover was repairing a knife handle in his workshop at the corner of Tudor Street and Surrey Street in Sheffield, revolutionized the manufacturing of decorative items such as buttons, buckles, spurs, and small boxes.

The monument is situated beside Wiremill Dam, a picturesque location near the Porter Valley, making it an ideal starting point for a scenic walk. Erected in 1926 by Sheffield's Master Cutler, the monument celebrates Boulsover's contribution to Sheffield's reputation as a world center for iron and steel products. Funded by Strelley Pegge of Beauchief, Boulsover's business expanded significantly, and in 1757, he acquired Whiteley Wood Hall, where he eventually passed away. Nearby, there is a small car park, offering convenient access for visitors interested in exploring the area's rich industrial heritage and natural beauty. The monument serves as a tribute to Boulsover's legacy in the city, reflecting his pivotal role in the advancement of Sheffield's metalworking industry.
