St. Louis City Hall, Saint Louis

St. Louis City Hall has served as the seat of the city's government since municipal offices first moved into the building in 1898, with construction fully completed in 1904. Designed by the architectural firm Eckel & Mann, the building was inspired by the Hôtel de Ville in Paris and is one of the finest examples of French Renaissance Revival architecture in the United States. The structure features a ground floor of dressed pink granite with upper floors built from pink-orange Roman brick and buff-colored limestone.

Although it originally included an 80-foot central tower and side spires, these elements were removed in 1936 after structural inspections revealed corrosion in their steel framework. The four-story building is distinguished by its symmetrical façade, decorative columns, arched windows, steep mansard roofs, and ornate dormers. Inside, visitors can admire a grand rotunda with white marble staircases, open balconies, ornamental plasterwork, and historic gold-trimmed council chambers that continue to host municipal meetings. Many original architectural features have been carefully preserved, offering a glimpse into early 20th-century civic design while the building continues to serve as the headquarters of the mayor's office and city administration.

Beyond its administrative role, St. Louis City Hall reflects the city's civic ambitions during the World's Fair era. It remains the workplace of numerous municipal departments while attracting visitors interested in historic public architecture and local history.
