Tour le Triangle (Triangle Tower), Montpellier

The Triangle Tower (Tour le Triangle) stands as an iconic symbol of modern Montpellier, dominating the city center with its impressive height of over 72 meters. As the second tallest building in Montpellier-surpassed only by the Tour d'Assas-it holds a prominent place in the urban skyline and offers breathtaking views of the nearby Comedy Square (Place de la Comédie).

The construction of the Triangle Tower began in the 1970s. The tower was strategically positioned to serve as a junction between the historic city center and the emerging modern district of Montpellier. It became a focal point that connected major traffic routes, including the ring roads that facilitate access from the northern, eastern, and western parts of the city, bridging industrial zones, residential areas, and the bustling commercial district.

The tower’s distinctive stepped design sets it apart from other buildings in Montpellier, and its unique architecture has made it a signature element of the city’s urban panorama. The lower levels of the building house the Galerie du Triangle shopping mall, which adjoins the larger Polygone shopping center. Inaugurated in 1975, the Polygone was constructed on the site of the former Esplanade train station and viaduct, once a terminus for trains traveling between Montpellier and Palavas. These historical structures were dismantled to make way for the housing and commercial complex that defines the area today.

In addition to its retail and commercial spaces, the Triangle Tower accommodates offices, residential units, and even a hotel. One of its notable tenants is the renowned Sauramps bookshop, a Montpellier institution with over sixty years of history. Spanning 2,500 square meters on the ground floor, Sauramps is the second largest independent bookshop in France, making it a cultural anchor for the building.
