Triple Rock, Berkeley
Located just three blocks north of the Berkeley BART station on Shattuck Avenue, Triple Rock Brewery & Alehouse is a legendary spot in the heart of Berkeley. Established in 1986 by brothers John and Reid Martin, it holds the distinction of being one of the first brewpubs in the United States. It’s even older than some of its patrons, thanks to Berkeley’s early adoption of this innovative beer business model.
Originally called Roaring Rock Brewery, the pub changed its name in 1989 after a legal dispute with Rolling Rock Brewing. Despite this, it maintained its original charm and is still run by the same owners. Triple Rock proudly boasts the use of its original brewing equipment, making it the oldest continuously operating brewpub in the country to do so.
Triple Rock offers a rotating selection of about ten award-winning beers brewed on-site, casual pub fare, and entertainment like shuffleboard. The influence of nearby UC Berkeley is hard to miss, especially during “Monkeyhead Thursdays,” when high-octane brews are the star. Sports fans will appreciate the TVs showcasing local games, while foodies can enjoy their elevated pub classics, from juicy burgers to shareable bites.
In 2016, the brewpub underwent a significant remodel, expanding its kitchen and adding a spacious new room. On sunny days, the rooftop seating provides the perfect spot to enjoy a pint. Triple Rock also hosts popular events like Firkin Fest and Sour Sunday, making it a hub for beer enthusiasts.
If you’re on a pub crawl, you’re in luck-Triple Rock is conveniently close to other renowned beer spots like Bobby G’s and Jupiter, the latter also founded by the Martin brothers. With a history that traces the roots of the craft beer renaissance in the Bay Area, Triple Rock remains a cherished local institution where beer and community thrive.
