University of Havana, Havana

University of Havana, Havana (must see)

The largest center for higher learning in Cuba and one of the first to be founded in the Americas (1721), the University of Havana has a beautiful campus with lots of trees and shade, providing a haven from the busy streets around it.

You can start your tour at the main building where, once you have climbed the famous steps, you will reach the bronze statue of Alma Mater. Admire the porticoes of the ornate main building, where you will find several frescoes created by Armando Menocal. Each of the frescoes represents one of the university’s founding areas of study: Liberal Arts, Thought, Law, Literature, Science, Art and Medicine. You can also see the Aula Magna, the Library, the gardens.

Best known alumni: Fidel Castro, who studied law here in the 1940s, graduating with full title at the head of his class while he was also the president of the National Association of Cuban Law Students. Just across the street from the steps is a monument to students slain when Batista's police opened fire on a peaceful student demonstration. No trip to Havana is completed without a visit to this important part of the city’s historical landscape.

Tip:
Please be aware that all buildings are closed to public access on weekends so be sure to visit during the week in order to wander around the grounds.
Also, if you don't feel comfortable with being asked for money, just say Hola and don't get into a conversation with anyone who approaches you on campus.
