University of Western Ontario, London
The University of Western Ontario is a public research university with a main campus of about 455 hectares. The Thames River runs along the eastern side, shaping the layout of academic buildings, residences, and green spaces. The university includes twelve faculties and schools, offering programs in fields such as arts, science, engineering, business, and health sciences.
Founded on March 7, 1878, by Isaac Hellmuth, the university developed from earlier foundations including Huron College, established in 1863. It began with four faculties: Arts, Divinity, Law, and Medicine, and became non-denominational in 1908. From 1919, it affiliated with various colleges, and after the Second World War, it expanded with new faculties, programs, and facilities.
Today, Western has around 43,000 to 45,000 students across its programs and a global network of more than 382,000 alumni. It is a founding member of the U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities, reflecting its role in advanced research. Student life includes athletics through the Western Mustangs, who compete in Ontario University Athletics under U Sports, alongside a range of academic and community activities.
