University of Western Ontario, London
The University of Western Ontario, also known as Western University, is a public research university. The main campus spans 455 hectares, surrounded by residential areas, with the Thames River running through the eastern part of the campus. The university consists of twelve academic faculties and schools.
Founded on March 7, 1878, by Bishop Isaac Hellmuth of the Anglican Diocese of Huron, the university originally included Huron College, established in 1863. The initial faculties were Arts, Divinity, Law, and Medicine. In 1908, the university became non-denominational and began affiliating with various denominational colleges starting in 1919. The institution expanded significantly after World War II, adding several new faculties and schools.
Western University is co-educational, with over 24,000 students and more than 306,000 alumni worldwide. It is one of the founding members of the U15, a group of Canada's leading research-intensive universities. The university's sports teams, the Western Mustangs, compete in the Ontario University Athletics conference of U Sports.
