University of Wisconsin–Madison Arboretum, Madison

University of Wisconsin–Madison Arboretum, Madison (must see)

The University of Wisconsin–Madison Arboretum has 17 miles of trails covering areas as diverse as wetlands, prairies, woodlands, and savannas. All of these natural areas have undergone restorations to keep them as close to their original state as possible. Visitors will get a better idea of what these wild areas looked like before European settlements arrived.

There are three gardens that help highlight a diversity of plant life, including the local species such as lilacs that make up the Longenecker Horticultural Gardens. The Viburnum Garden has over 80 Viburnum species. The Wisconsin Native Plant Garden focuses on native species, all cultivated using sustainable practices.

Another highlight worthy of attention is the rehabilitation project at Curtis Pond. This pond was created in 1971 as part of a stormwater management system. Some of the trails provide a close look at what is going on with the pond and the rehabilitation efforts. You'll leave with a new appreciation for everything that these gardens offer.
