Uriarte Talavera Workshop, Puebla
Uriarte Talavera Workshop, founded in 1824, is one of Mexico’s oldest active Talavera producers. Its role became especially important in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when political instability and the Mexican Revolution left only a few workshops still operating. By continuing production, Uriarte helped preserve a craft that was close to disappearing.
A turning point came in 1897, when Spanish artist Enrique Luis Ventosa partnered with the workshop. He renewed Talavera by blending Spanish-Moorish roots with Art Nouveau forms, pre-Hispanic motifs, and Chinese-inspired imagery. This wider visual language still appears in its plates, jars, tiles, and decorative objects, linking tradition with contemporary design.
The visit offers a close look at a demanding handmade process. Clay is shaped, dried, fired, glazed, painted, and fired again, with artisans using mineral pigments and fine brushes to create precise patterns and raised details. Strict quality control rejects flawed pieces, while authentic works carry marks on the unglazed base, including the workshop mark, year, artist initials, and denomination-of-origin designation.
