Museo Bello y González, Puebla

Museo Bello y González, Puebla

Museo Bello y González preserves the private collection formed by José Luis Bello y González and expanded by his son, José Mariano Bello y Acedo. Mariano’s 1918 will required the collection to remain intact and serve the public, which gives the museum the character of a preserved family legacy rather than a conventional gallery.

The building adds strongly to that impression. A former colonial house was remodelled in the early 20th century into a Porfirian mansion, with painted ceilings, ceramic details, and decorated wall panels. Mariano’s office, with red damask fabric and geometric ceramic work, reflects his collector’s taste, while other rooms show the period’s interest in European styles, including French imperial design.

The collection spans America, Europe, and Asia, with paintings, Talavera ceramics, featherwork, porcelain, ivory, glass, metalwork, furniture, musical instruments, and rare objects. Highlights include a 17th-century Filipino chest with a painted view of Manila, Chinese ivory “spheres of life,” an 18th-century pipe organ, a rare English Euphonicon, Roman amphorae, iron stirrups, and a Spanish strongbox with multiple working locks. Because the rooms are small and the objects fragile, visits are often accompanied by a guide.
