Vicarstown Bar, Cork

Vicarstown Bar opened in its current form in 2011, occupying a historic building shaped by a long, narrow medieval burgage plot. Its interior is arranged through several compact rooms before opening into a much larger rear area. The name comes from Vicarstown, a rural locality to the north, reflecting the tradition of publicans naming establishments after their home places.

Low lighting, dark corners and deep booth seating give the pub an intimate atmosphere, combining elements of a traditional Irish bar with a casual urban dive-bar character. Some readers have informally associated its mood with Kevin Barry’s City of Bohane, although this is a cultural comparison rather than an official connection.

Behind the interior lies a large beer garden enclosed by weathered stone and brick walls that preserve traces of the site’s older structure. Vicarstown is also internally connected to its sister venue, The Black Dog, which focuses on rock, alternative and metal music, regular DJ sets, tequila and mezcal, and tacos from its in-house taqueria. Both venues are also known for welcoming well-behaved dogs in their indoor areas and beer gardens.
