Village at Shirlington, Arlington

The Village at Shirlington is a mixed-use district that combines restaurants, shops, services, entertainment venues, and residential buildings in a pedestrian-oriented setting. Its history began in 1944, when Shirlington Shopping Center opened as one of the earliest large suburban shopping centers in the United States.

The property was redesigned as a main-street-style commercial area during the 1980s and expanded again in the mid-2000s, adding residences, retail space, a public library, and a performing-arts complex. Today, it serves as a destination where shopping, dining, entertainment, and everyday community life come together in a walkable environment. The central promenade contains independent businesses and national chains offering clothing, gifts, groceries, personal services, and other goods. Restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, and bars serve American and international cuisines, and many provide outdoor dining along the pedestrian-friendly streets. The district is home to Signature Theatre, a Tony Award-winning regional company known for musicals, plays, and new works, as well as the Shirlington branch of Arlington Public Library and a multiplex cinema. Public seating, plazas, landscaped areas, and seasonal plantings provide places to meet or relax between shopping, dining, and performances. A phased improvement project underway in 2026 is introducing wider sidewalks, additional outdoor dining areas, new lighting, landscaping, and public art, so access to some sections may temporarily change during construction.

Nearby trails connect visitors with Four Mile Run and the Washington & Old Dominion Trail network. Seasonal promotions, performances, library programs, and community activities provide additional reasons to return throughout the year, combining recreation conveniently.
