Wat Phra Phoun, Vientiane
Wat Phra Phoun, also called Wat That Phoun or Wat That Foun, is a Buddhist temple built around an old stupa known as That Phoun. The stupa is believed to date from the sixteenth century and is linked to the reign of King Setthathirath, who moved the capital of the Lan Xang Kingdom to this region in 1560 and ordered the construction of several religious monuments.
The main structure in the complex is the stupa. It stands on a stepped base and rises into a tall tower, following a traditional Lao Buddhist design. Parts of the surface are covered with plaster and gold paint that is renewed during restoration. Entrance gates decorated with naga figures mark the temple grounds. Nearby is the main prayer hall, where monks hold ceremonies. Inside are Buddha statues and offerings such as candles, incense, and flowers.
The temple grounds include monks’ living quarters, smaller shrines, and shaded courtyards. Local residents visit to make merit, offer food to monks, and join religious activities. During festivals such as Vesak and Lao New Year, larger groups gather for prayers and traditional ceremonies. Visitors can observe everyday Buddhist practices.
