Windmill De Bonne Chiere, Brugge

Windmill De Bonne Chiere, Brugge

Windmill De Bonne Chiere, situated in Bruges, carries a significant historical legacy tied to the city's rich milling history. Bruges, during the late 13th century when its second set of walls was constructed, included designated spaces for windmills. Historical records from the 16th century indicate that there were as many as 25 windmills along the town walls, with eight positioned between the Kruispoort and the Dampoort.

De Bonne Chiere stands out among these historical mills. Originally constructed in 1888 in the village of Olsene, it was relocated to Bruges in 1911. This relocation was necessitated by the destruction of the original Bonne Chiere mill, which was demolished by a storm in 1903. Despite its functional origins, the rebuilt mill at Bruges has never been used for grinding grain; rather, it serves a purely decorative purpose.

Architecturally, De Bonne Chiere is a wooden standard mill mounted on four brick bases. It is located near the Kruispoort, making it the southernmost of the windmills currently standing in Bruges. This position marks it as the first windmill visitors encounter when touring the remaining mills along Kruisvest Street. Although it is not accessible to the public, its presence enhances the historical ambiance of Bruges, reflecting a bygone era when windmills played a crucial role in the city's industry.

Today, from the original 25, only four windmills remain in Bruges. De Bonne Chiere's historical and cultural significance, along with its scenic placement, continues to contribute to the heritage and picturesque landscape of Bruges.
