Wisconsin Avenue, Washington D.C.

Wisconsin Avenue is one of Northwest Washington’s great old corridors, running from the historic streets of Georgetown through Glover Park, Cathedral Heights, Tenleytown, and Friendship Heights before continuing into Maryland. Its roots go back much further than today’s storefronts suggest. The road follows the path of an old Native American trail and later became part of the Georgetown and Rockville Turnpike, a route used to move tobacco, farm goods, and other products toward Georgetown’s busy port. In Georgetown, this stretch was once known as High Street before the area’s street names were standardized in the late 19th century.

Today, Wisconsin Avenue is best known as a lively mix of shopping, dining, history, and neighborhood life. It meets M Street to form one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs, where national retailers, fashion boutiques, cafés, and long-running local businesses sit inside repurposed historic buildings. Visitors can browse contemporary shops, stop for chocolates or stationery, and then step into one of the area’s classic restaurants, Martin’s Tavern, associated with generations of Washington insiders, political gossip, and the kind of booths that have probably heard more secrets than some intelligence agencies...

Farther north, the avenue changes character as it passes near Glover Park, Cathedral Heights, and the Washington National Cathedral, one of the city’s major architectural landmarks. After that, Tenleytown adds another layer of history: once a rural village around a tavern serving wagon traffic between farms and Georgetown. By the time the avenue reaches Friendship Heights, the corridor shifts again, becoming a busy shopping and transit district at the D.C.–Maryland line.

So, in essence, it is safe to say that Wisconsin Avenue is a road that doubles as a cross-section of Washington’s commercial, residential, and architectural history.
