Zoologico Guadalajara (Guadalajara Zoo), Guadalajara
Guadalajara Zoo is one of Latin America’s premier zoological parks and Mexico’s largest in terms of species count . Opened on March 11, 1988, the zoo spans approximately 50 hectares within the lush Barranca de Huentitán canyon, blending modern exhibits with conservation goals. With over 360 species and around 2,200 to 3,500 individual animals, it offers a chance to tour ecosystems from around the world-from African savannas to Antarctic shores.
Among the zoo’s highlights is the Safari Masái Mara, where guests board a guided vehicle tour through African plains teeming with giraffes, elephants, zebras, rhinos, and more. The Herpetarium, Latin America’s largest reptile house, and the immersive Selva Tropical-home to tigers, jaguars, chimpanzees, and anteaters-bring visitors face-to-face with exotic wildlife. Don't miss Monkeyland, featuring primates including gorillas and ring-tailed lemurs, or the Aquarium and Antarctica penguin enclosure, which further diversify the experience.
For a bird’s-eye view, the Sky Zoo aerial cable cars glide above the park and Huentitán Canyon, offering panoramic vistas and a unique perspective on the habitats below. The Villa Australiana brings a taste of Down Under, with kangaroos and exotic birds, while the Manatee Port and various aviaries, plus multiple walking trails, round out the park’s diverse attractions.
More than a recreational destination, Guadalajara Zoo is deeply committed to wildlife preservation and education. It has successfully bred endangered species like the Mexican wolf and Morelet’s crocodile, and its rescued manatees, penguins, and rhinos highlight its conservation efforts.
