The 9:30 Club, formerly known as Nightclub 9:30 and often referred to simply as the 9:30, is a popular nightclub and concert venue located in Washington, D.C. This establishment received significant recognition in 2018 when Rolling Stone named it one of the top 10 live music venues in the United States. The following year, in 2019, the club earned the prestigious title of "Venue of the Decade" by VenuesNow.
Initially, the club was situated in the lower rear section of the Atlantic Building, specifically at 930 F Street NW, in the downtown area of the city. It officially opened its doors on May 31, 1980, with a legal capacity limit of 199 attendees. However, in 1996, the club underwent a relocation to a larger space, its present location. This move also marked the club's position as an anchor at the eastern end of the U Street Corridor.
The name "9:30 Club" originates from its original street address, which also influenced its initial opening time of 9:30 p.m. Early promotional efforts on D.C.'s WHFS radio utilized the slogan "9:30 – a Place and Time!"
