Academy of Fine Arts, Sarajevo

Academy of Fine Arts, Sarajevo

Set along the Miljacka River, Sarajevo’s Academy of Fine Arts is both a working art faculty and one of the city’s most striking landmarks. Housed in the first-and once the only-Evangelical church built during the Austro-Hungarian period, the building dates to 1899 and was designed by architect Karlo Parzik in an eclectic Romanesque-Byzantine style. Today, it belongs to the University of Sarajevo and is listed as a protected cultural-historical monument, a reminder of the city’s layered past and enduring creativity.

Pause on the riverbank to take in its pale domes and sculptural detailing, then cross the contemporary pedestrian bridge “Festina lente” (“make haste slowly”) that arcs to the academy’s front steps. Conceived by students of the Product Design department, the 38-meter bridge has become a photo favorite and a neat symbol of Sarajevo: historic silhouettes on one bank, fresh ideas on the other.

While primarily an educational institution, the academy anchors a lively cultural corridor; even a quick look at its façade tells a story of survival-the building was damaged at the start of the Bosnian War in 1992 and subsequently restored. The school’s six departments-Art Education, Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Graphic Design, and Product Design-underscore the city’s role as a regional arts hub, and the setting makes an atmospheric stop on any walk between the Old Town and the modern center. Bring a camera, linger by the river, and let the architecture frame your Sarajevo stroll.
