Valter Perić Monument, Sarajevo
The Valter Peric Monument stands as a solemn tribute to Vladimir "Valter" Peric, the courageous Yugoslav Partisan commander who led Sarajevo’s resistance against German and Ustasha forces during World War II. Situated near the Skenderija Bridge and the city's old power distribution centre, the monument is both accessible and poignant, nestled in a small park that invites quiet reflection amidst urban life.
Vladimir Peric was born in Prijepolje in 1919 and relocated to Sarajevo in the late 1930s, where he joined the Communist Party and later became deeply involved in underground resistance efforts beginning in 1943. As the head of Sarajevo’s clandestine anti-fascist network, he orchestrated acts of sabotage and coordinated support with the broader Partisan movement. On the night of April 5–6, 1945, he was killed defending the city's power plant-one of the final acts of defiance before Sarajevo's liberation.
His legacy grew into legend with the 1972 film Walter Defends Sarajevo, which turned his name into a lasting symbol of the city. The film’s closing line-“You see that city? That’s Walter!”-became part of Sarajevo’s identity. In early 1992, Sarajevo protestors revived his memory with the slogan “Mi smo Valter” (“We are Walter”) during an anti-war movement against rising nationalism.
Today, the sleek marble bust and pedestal of the Valter Peric Monument quietly honor a hero who unified Sarajevo’s diverse communities in resistance. When visiting, take a moment to substitute the surrounding bustle for a respectful silence and reflect on how Valter’s bravery and leadership helped shape the spirit of Sarajevo.
