Adler Planetarium, Chicago

Adler Planetarium, Chicago

The Adler Planetarium has been helping us mere mortals pretend we understand the universe since 1930. Nestled at the tip of the Museum Campus, this architectural marvel was designed by Ernest A. Grunsfeld Jr., and boy, does it love to flaunt its twelve-sided zodiac dome. Because who wouldn't want to be surrounded by astrological signs while contemplating the cosmos?

Inside this celestial funhouse, you'll find three theaters and an antique instrument collection that would make even Galileo raise an eyebrow. And don't forget about the Doane Observatory, where you can peep at planets, stars, and galaxies through the city's largest telescope, like a true interstellar voyeur.

But wait, there's more! At this Planetarium, they've got artifacts and interactive elements to make space history feel as down-to-earth as your daily commute. The Grainger Sky Theater offers views of space so realistic you'll wonder why you're not wearing a spacesuit. They've even got a new permanent exhibit called "The Universe: A Walk Through Space and Time". Because, let's face it, who doesn't want to take a leisurely stroll through the vastness of the cosmos while gawking at touch screens like a kid in an intergalactic candy store?

Feel like going on a space journey? Well, the Adler's got you covered with their Definiti Space Theater, and if you're really feeling fancy, you can don 3-D glasses in the Samuel C. Johnson Family Star Theater.

When you're done contemplating the universe, don't forget to recharge at their on-site café and splurge on cosmic trinkets at the gift shop.

And for the love of Pluto, check their calendar for "out-of-this-world" events, exhibits, and tours. It's a space-age party, and everyone's invited!

Why You Should Visit:
Dedicated to space exploration... past, present & future!

Tip:
The setting of the Planetarium affords splendid vistas of Lake Michigan and the downtown Chicago skyline. Be sure to seize the opportunity to amble about, capture some photographs, and savor the picturesque scenery!
