African Waterhole, Sydney
One of the standout attractions at Taronga Zoo Sydney is the African Waterhole, a central focal point within its broader African Savannah precinct. Located on the northwestern slopes of the zoo, the Waterhole is designed to replicate a natural savannah setting where giraffes, zebras, and other species share a habitat with minimal visible barriers, separated only by a water boundary.
The Waterhole offers more than just animal viewing - walkways, interpretive signage, and careful landscaping let visitors feel closer to the animals while still ensuring their welfare. In particular, giraffes Jimiyu and Zarafa, and recent arrivals like Kito and her calf Ebo, are visible grazing near the water’s edge, framed against scenic views of Sydney Harbour.
This part of the precinct also houses zebras in the same open environment, giving guests an opportunity to appreciate how different herbivore species can co-exist in a shared ecosystem. Beyond the large animals, the African Savannah precinct includes meercats and fennec foxes, giving a layered experience of African wildlife in compact, well-designed habitats.
Constructed as part of a major redevelopment of Taronga’s giraffe and zebra area, the African Waterhole and surrounding precinct represent a modern, conservation-oriented vision. The project aims to provide a strong link between visitor engagement and education about African ecology and conservation challenges.
