Amphibian & Reptile Conservation Centre, Sydney

The Amphibian & Reptile Conservation Centre (ARC) at Taronga Zoo Sydney is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to showcasing and protecting some of the world’s most remarkable cold-blooded species. Officially opened in June 2024, the ARC replaced the zoo’s earlier reptile house, long known informally as “Reptile World.” The new centre reflects Taronga’s shift toward immersive, conservation-focused exhibits that highlight the crucial ecological role of reptiles and amphibians while addressing global threats such as habitat loss, pollution, and climate change.

The ARC’s design combines naturalistic enclosures with advanced environmental controls that replicate the diverse climates reptiles and amphibians inhabit-from Australia’s arid interiors to tropical wetlands and rainforests.

Visitors encounter pythons, freshwater crocodiles, tree frogs, skinks, turtles, and venomous snakes, displayed in habitats that mirror their natural environments. Interactive displays and touchscreens explain their physiology, breeding cycles, and importance within ecosystems, while large viewing panels and atmospheric lighting create a sense of immersion.

Central to the ARC’s mission is the conservation and breeding of endangered species, including several rare Australian frogs whose populations have been devastated by disease and habitat decline. Behind the scenes, the centre houses breeding labs and research spaces supporting Taronga’s long-term efforts to restore wild populations.

Keeper presentations and feeding sessions offer insights into animal care and behaviour, allowing visitors to appreciate the complexity and adaptability of reptiles and amphibians.
