Aga Khan University Grounds, Karachi

The Aga Khan University Grounds form the landscaped campus of a major institution for higher education, medical training, and healthcare. Planning began in 1970 under the vision of His Highness the Aga Khan IV, and the university was formally chartered in 1983.

Originally covering 64 acres and later expanded to approximately 83–84 acres, the campus combines modern architecture with landscaped spaces influenced by Islamic design traditions, supporting education, research, healthcare, and reflection. The campus features buildings finished in warm, earth-toned textured plaster, shaded courtyards, tree-lined walkways, gardens, and plazas connecting academic, medical, and residential areas. The master plan integrates buildings with arcades, pools, pathways, and carefully planned green spaces. Among its notable landscapes is the Aamir Kanji Gardens, inaugurated on December 19, 2013, as a contemporary interpretation of traditional Islamic garden design. The gardens contain varied plant species, flowing water features, granite walkways, and seating areas designed for patients, students, staff, and visitors. Although the campus primarily serves students, researchers, medical professionals, and patients, its grounds are also valued for their landscape design and calm atmosphere. Visitors attending conferences, academic programs, or medical appointments can experience the relationship between architecture and nature through its gardens, courtyards, walkways, and accessible public spaces.

The carefully arranged vegetation, water features, shaded passages, and gathering areas also demonstrate how landscape architecture contributes to the university’s educational and healthcare environment while providing spaces for rest, movement, and social interaction.
