Karachi World War Two Cemetery, Karachi

Karachi War Cemetery is the principal Commonwealth war cemetery in Karachi and an important military memorial site. Established and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC), it commemorates Commonwealth servicemen and women who died during the Second World War.

The cemetery contains 642 Commonwealth burials from the war, including casualties whose remains were transferred here after the conflict from smaller cemeteries across areas that now form Pakistan. The cemetery includes graves of soldiers, sailors, airmen, and other service personnel from several countries, reflecting Karachi’s role as a military, naval, and logistical center during the war. Its landscaped grounds feature lawns, flowering plants, and rows of uniform white headstones arranged according to CWGC design principles. At the center stands the Cross of Sacrifice, a feature found in many Commonwealth war cemeteries. Headstones generally record each casualty’s name, rank, service number, unit, and date of death, together with a religious emblem where appropriate and, in some cases, a personal inscription chosen by relatives. Beyond its commemorative purpose, the cemetery provides a connection with Karachi’s contribution to the Allied war effort during the Second World War. Relatives of those buried here, military personnel, diplomats, historians, and other visitors come to pay their respects or explore this aspect of military history.

Remembrance ceremonies are also held at the site to honor the dead. The carefully maintained graves, landscaped grounds, and central memorial provide a quiet setting for reflection while preserving the memory of Commonwealth personnel buried far from their original homes.
