Agua Caliente Tower, Tijuana (must see)
The Agua Caliente Tower is one of the surviving reminders of the former Agua Caliente Casino and Hotel, a large resort complex that opened in 1928 during the years of U.S. Prohibition. During U.S. Prohibition, the resort drew American visitors with horse racing, baths, nightlife, and celebrity guests, helping turn the area into a busy leisure district.
The original resort was designed in a style that blended Spanish Colonial Revival details with Moorish and Mission influences. Although much of the complex is gone, the tower preserves its late-1920s visual style through its arches, tiled roof, decorative openings, and layered silhouette. The structure seen today is a reconstruction of the historic tower after the original was destroyed by fire, but it continues to serve as one of the clearest visual links to the resort era.
The history of Agua Caliente also reflects broader political and social changes in Mexico. In the 1930s, President Lázaro Cárdenas outlawed casino gambling across the country, bringing an end to the resort’s most famous period. Parts of the former grounds were later converted for educational use, and nearby institutions gradually replaced the earlier image of gambling and luxury tourism. The tower therefore represents both the glamour of the Prohibition years and the transformation that followed afterward.
Today, the tower houses the local Sports Hall of Fame and stands as a recognizable landmark connected to the region’s layered past. Visitors often stop to photograph its distinctive shape, while the surrounding area offers a contrast between modern development and traces of early twentieth-century resort culture.
