Tijuana Cultural Center, Tijuana

Tijuana Cultural Center, Tijuana (must see)

The Tijuana Cultural Center, often known as CECUT, is one of Baja California’s main cultural landmarks. Opened in 1982, it was designed as a federal cultural space that would strengthen Mexican identity in the border region. It also became the only completed centre from a wider plan to create similar cultural facilities along the U.S.–Mexico border.

The complex was co-designed by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, the architect behind Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthropology, together with Manuel Rosen Morrison. Its most recognizable feature is the spherical IMAX cinema, known as “La Bola.” Its desert-sand colour comes from pigments mixed into the concrete, so the dome can age naturally without paint. Its first film, El pueblo del sol, screened there for 13 years.

Inside, CECUT combines museum, cinema, gallery, and performance spaces. The Museo de las Californias presents the history of the peninsula through maps, models, archaeological objects, and material linked to Indigenous cultures, missions, border development, and modern life. The exhibition areas are also notable for their column-free steel roof, which creates an open layout and allows broad views from the ramps.

The centre has continued to expand beyond its original design. In 2008, El Cubo added a contemporary art gallery built to host major national and international exhibitions. Visitors will also find a regional cinematheque, a small aquarium focused on marine life from the Gulf of California and the Pacific, and a botanical cactus garden. Together, these spaces make CECUT a practical starting point for understanding the region’s art, history, and cultural identity.
