Dandy del Sur, Tijuana

Dandy del Sur, Tijuana

Dandy del Sur is one of the area’s long-running traditional cantinas, with roots traced to 1957. It was later moved to its present home in 1980 by longtime owner Manuel “Manolo” Escobedo. Local lore says Manolo disliked the clean, sterile interior first built for the bar, tore it out, and rebuilt it himself to give the place the rougher, warmer character it is known for today.

Inside, the bar feels deliberately unpolished, with wooden details, booths, framed images, paintings, rodeo references, and a neon jukebox that has become part of its identity. Its music selection is unusually broad for a cantina, moving from classic Mexican tracks to 1960s rock-and-roll, 1980s new wave, and later indie rock. This mix helps explain its appeal to neighbourhood regulars, artists, musicians, off-duty bartenders, and curious visitors.

The bar also has a small place in pop culture. Anthony Bourdain featured it in the Baja episode of No Reservations, and musicians such as Manu Chao and Gustavo Cerati have been associated with it. For tourists, the experience is shaped by simple rituals: the house “Astronaut” shot made with tequila, instant coffee, and sugar; warm carne seca dressed with lime, salt, and hot sauce; and a daily shift from quiet daytime refuge to lively nighttime gathering place.
