Mercado Hidalgo (Hidalgo Market), Tijuana

Mercado Hidalgo (Hidalgo Market), Tijuana

Mercado Hidalgo traces its origins to 1955, when 58 vendor families began selling local produce informally from car trunks in the older commercial centre. After years of growth and relocation, it settled into its permanent two-story market space in 1984. Many stalls remain family-owned, with businesses passed down through several generations.

From the outside, the market can seem almost closed off, with solid perimeter walls giving it a fortress-like appearance. Inside, it opens into a busy grid of stalls selling dried chilies, moles, spices, regional cheeses, sweets, piñatas, pottery, baskets, religious items, and household goods. The market also has its own merchant union, which helps manage maintenance, security, cleaning, and internal disputes.

Deep inside the grounds is a private chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, used for devotion and for final farewells when long-time vendors pass away. Food is another part of the market’s identity, with long-running eateries such as El Rincón del Oso, known for traditional soups and home-style dishes, adding to its role as both a shopping place and a living community.
