Tijuana Brewery, Tijuana

Tijuana Brewery, Tijuana (must see)

Tijuana Brewery links northern Mexico’s older beer traditions with Baja California’s modern craft movement. Known for Czech-influenced lagers and pilsners, it was shaped by founder José Antonio González’s search for European brewing knowledge and by the work of a third-generation Czech brewmaster. Its traditional approach helped distinguish it during the early growth of regional craft beer.

The brewery’s story also connects to a much older beer culture shaped during the U.S. Prohibition era of the 1920s and early 1930s. At that time, American bartenders, brewers, and nightlife entrepreneurs crossed the border as alcohol restrictions spread across the United States. Beer halls, casinos, and entertainment venues flourished, while Cervecería Mexicali became an important early regional brewery. Its Mexicali Beer Hall, nicknamed “La Ballena,” was promoted as the world’s longest bar.

Inside, the brewery has the feel of a classic brewpub rather than a polished tasting lounge. Wooden furnishings, brewing references, and beer-focused décor create a relaxed setting, while the beer selection traditionally centered on crisp lagers, pilsners, and darker European-style beers. These styles reflect the classic four-ingredient brewing philosophy of water, malt, hops, and yeast.

The wider brewing scene around it has changed considerably. Newer breweries often experiment with sweeter, fruitier, or more spice-driven styles shaped by Baja Med cuisine and Southern California craft beer culture. Cross-border influence can also be seen in beers such as Xocoveza, a Stone Brewing seasonal stout inspired by Mexican hot chocolate. Many newer tasting rooms now share space with galleries, music venues, and independent art spaces.
