Cavafy Museum, Alexandria

Cavafy Museum, Alexandria

The Cavafy Museum preserves the former home of Constantine P. Cavafy, one of the most important Greek-language poets of the modern era. He lived here for much of his adult life while working as a clerk at the Egyptian Ministry of Public Works. During his lifetime, he avoided conventional book publication, printing poems on loose sheets or small booklets for selected readers.

Inside, the museum suggests the atmosphere of a private apartment shaped by books, memory, and careful habits. Visitors can see photographs, portraits, manuscripts, letters, printed editions, furniture, and personal objects connected with the poet’s life and work. Cavafy was a demanding editor, often revising poems for years before approving them. This careful process shaped the spare, precise style of his poetry.

The apartment also reflects Cavafy’s cosmopolitan background. He spent part of his youth in England and wrote early texts in English, while remaining rooted in a multilingual Greek cultural world. Before becoming a museum in 1992, the apartment served as a modest hostel, later preserved through the efforts of Greek writer and diplomat Kostis Moskof.
