St. Catherine's Cathedral, Alexandria
St. Catherine’s Cathedral is one of Egypt’s notable Roman Catholic landmarks, closely tied to the Franciscan presence in the country. The present basilica was built between 1847 and 1856 on the site of earlier Franciscan churches. Its construction took place under Ottoman rule, as European monastic communities gained more freedom to build in Egypt.
The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the early Christian martyr remembered in tradition for her learning, faith, and debate with pagan philosophers. Inside, 12 oil icons above the main columns, gifted by King Ferdinand I of Austria in 1847, depict scenes from Saint Catherine’s story and reflect wider European Catholic patronage.
The building also preserves other layers of memory. A relic display linked to Saint Sabina is kept inside the cathedral, while a nearby monastic church with rare wall paintings was rediscovered in 2003. King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy was also buried here after his death in exile in 1947, before his remains returned to Italy in 2017. Today, the cathedral remains an active place of worship and community support.
