Alexandria Opera House, Alexandria
The Alexandria Opera House, originally named the "Mohamed Ali Theatre," was built in 1918 during the reign of Sultan Fuad I. Designed by French architect Georges Baroque and owned by Badr El Din Kerdany, the building's beauty declined over time. In 1962, it was renamed "Sayed Darwish Theatre" to honor the pioneer of Arab music. Previous restoration efforts were damaging, but in 2000, the building was added to Egypt's Heritage List, prompting extensive renovations. By 2004, the theatre was restored, and its reopening was attended by President and Mrs. Hosni Mubarak.
Today, the Alexandria Opera House hosts performances by the Cairo Opera House companies, including opera, ballet, symphony orchestras, Arab music ensembles, and modern dance theatre. It also features local and international recitals, Cultural Weeks, and festivals. To support ballet, classical, and Arab music talents, the Alexandria Opera Company for Arab Music and Singing and the Talents Development Centre were established, where prominent educators and professors train young Egyptian talents.
