Amadeo Roldan, Havana

Amadeo Roldan, Havana

The Amadeo Roldán Theatre, situated in the vibrant heart of Havana, is a significant cultural landmark with a rich history and a dynamic role in the contemporary music scene. Constructed in 1929, this theatre originally served as a premier venue for a variety of performances. However, its legacy faced a dramatic turn in 1977 when it was devastated by an act of arson committed by a pyromaniac, leading to a prolonged period of closure.

After a 22-year hiatus, the theatre was rejuvenated and reopened in 1999, embarking on a new chapter as the headquarters of the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba. This prestigious ensemble has since been enchanting audiences with seasonal performances every Sunday at 11:00pm, showcasing a repertoire that spans symphonic masterpieces to contemporary works.

The architectural marvel that houses the Amadeo Roldán Theatre, once known as The Havana Auditorium, is a testament to modern monumental architecture. Within its walls, the theatre is divided into two main halls: the Amadeo Roldán and García Caturla halls. The Amadeo Roldán hall, with a seating capacity of 886, is the primary venue for significant concerts featuring renowned artists such as Egberto Gismonti and Leo Brouwer. In contrast, the García Caturla hall, accommodating 276 persons, offers a more intimate setting for small band performances, catering to a diverse array of musical tastes from classical to contemporary.

Beyond serving as the residence of the National Symphony Orchestra, the Amadeo Roldán Theatre has become a hub for prestigious international events. One such notable event is the "International Guitar Gathering" (Encuentro Internacional de Guitarra), which attracts talent and aficionados from across the globe, further solidifying the theatre's status as a cornerstone of cultural exchange and musical excellence in Cuba.
