Founded by the Spanish in 1519 on Cuba's sheltered northwestern coast, Havana quickly grew into one of the most important cities in the Spanish Empire. Its strategic position at the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico made it the principal gathering point for treasure fleets carrying gold, silver, and other riches from the Americas to Spain. After the French corsair Jacques de Sores sacked and burned the city in 1555, the Spanish Crown embarked on an ambitious program of fortifications.

By the 17th century, Havana had become a thriving naval and commercial center, renowned for its shipyards, where some of Spain's finest warships were constructed from durable Cuban hardwoods. Wealth generated by transatlantic trade transformed the city, filling it with elegant churches, monasteries, mansions, and public squares.

Today, Old Havana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for one of the best-preserved colonial city centers in the Americas. Its maze of narrow streets opens onto five historic plazas, each with its own character and surrounded by magnificent Baroque and neoclassical buildings. At the edge of the historic center stands Havana's monumental National Capitol, completed in 1929.

Among Old Havana's architectural highlights is the magnificent Havana Cathedral, consecrated in 1777 and instantly recognizable by its asymmetrical bell towers. Nearby, the Arms Square, the city's oldest square, has been the political and military heart of Havana since the 16th century. Overlooking the square is the Castle of the Royal Force, whose museum preserves the original bronze La Giraldilla weather vane, the enduring symbol of Havana.

In Old Square, colorful colonial buildings adorned with graceful arcades, wrought-iron balconies, and stained-glass windows create one of the city's most picturesque settings.
