Anguri Bagh Garden, Agra

Anguri Bagh Garden, Agra

Anguri Bagh Garden, meaning “Garden of Grapes,” is a carefully designed enclosure within the Agra Fort, laid out in the traditional Mughal Charbagh style. The garden features symmetrical walkways, flower beds, and water channels, with small fountains and shallow pools adding to its orderly design. While the name suggests grapevines once grew here, today the garden is primarily planted with flowers, which can cause some confusion for visitors about its historical identity.

Commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1637, the garden was located near the zenana, the women’s quarters, offering a private retreat for royal women. It is part of the Khas Mahal complex and is bordered by red sandstone arcades, with nearby structures such as the hammams (a type of royal bathhouses) enhancing the garden’s historical context. The enclosed and compact design created an intimate space for relaxation and private gatherings within the larger fort.

Access to Anguri Bagh is sometimes limited, and the garden may not always be fully open to the public. However, it can often be viewed from adjacent rooftops or nearby pavilions, allowing visitors to appreciate its layout and relation to surrounding structures. The combination of water features, greenery, and architectural framing demonstrates the Mughal attention to integrating natural and built elements.
