Art and Culture Center, Bangkok

Art and Culture Center, Bangkok

The idea for a modern art museum in Bangkok was first proposed by the city's governor, Bhichit Rarrakul. However, despite initial plans to begin construction in 2000, the project faced delays due to financial issues and suspicions of corruption. It wasn't until 2005 that the project was finally restarted. Originally named the Bangkok Metropolitan Museum of Contemporary Art (BMOCA), the venue underwent a last-minute name change to become the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre just before its inauguration.

The center, located in the heart of Bangkok's main shopping and entertainment district, eventually opened its doors in 2009, following numerous delays and disputes. It has become a prominent landmark, featuring a large white statue of a woman, approximately 20 feet tall. Initially, the center remained empty and unused for several months. However, it has gradually come to life with a somewhat unusual combination of private shops and galleries.

Nearly two years after its opening, the center now boasts a thriving collection of shops and has become a popular destination for both tourists and locals. Occasionally, it hosts film festivals on a state-of-the-art live theater stage, which also showcases modern dance exhibitions. The Art and Culture Center offers a variety of exhibits, some of which are more permanent than others. The primary galleries are located on the upper floors, while the first three floors are home to various private art galleries, designer boutiques, music studios, and related shops.

Eating is huge in Bangkok, and luckily for the famished, you won't be that way for long, regardless of the hour. You can find conglomerations of vendors selling five-star fast food (in the you-won't-have-to-wait-long-to-enjoy-it sense, not McDonald's style) for under 100 baht (roughly...
