Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore
The Baltimore Museum of Art is one of the oldest art museums in the United States, having been founded in 1914. It is housed in a neoclassical building designed by John Russell Pope, and features two landscaped gardens with 20th-century sculpture. The museum's collection of 95,000 objects includes over 1,000 works by Henri Matisse, as well as one of the nation's finest holdings of prints, drawings, and photographs.
The museum's galleries showcase collections of art from Africa, works by established and emerging contemporary artists, European and American paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts, ancient Antioch mosaics, art from Asia, and textiles from around the world.
One of the highlights of the museum is the Cone Collection, which was brought together by Claribel and Etta Cone, two accomplished collectors who amassed a wealth of works by artists such as Matisse, Picasso, Cézanne, Degas, Gauguin, Van Gogh, and Renoir, nearly all of which were donated to the museum.
The museum is also home to 18,000 works of French mid-19th-century art from the George A. Lucas collection, which has been acclaimed as a cultural "treasure" and "among the greatest single holdings of French art in the country." The current director of the Baltimore Museum of Art is Christopher Bedford, who was appointed in May 2016.
The Baltimore Museum of Art is committed to artistic excellence and social equity, striving to connect art to Baltimore and Baltimore to the world. Through collecting, researching, presenting, and interpreting the museum's rich and varied collection, the museum aims to embody its commitment to excellence, fairness, relevance, and social justice.
The Baltimore Museum of Art aspires to be the most relevant publicly engaged museum in the United States and a dynamic model for all others.
