Washington Monument and Museum at Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore

Washington Monument and Museum at Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore

The Washington Monument is the first major monument dedicated to George Washington. Designed by Robert Mills, the structure takes the form of a 178-foot marble Doric column, crowned by a statue of Washington carved by Enrico Causici. Bronze inscriptions around the base, developed with input from John Quincy Adams, outline key moments from Washington’s life.

Set within a series of landscaped squares, the monument is framed by fountains, pathways, and rows of 19th-century buildings. Visitors can enter the monument and climb 227 steps along a narrow spiral staircase. The ascent is gradual, with small openings offering partial views before reaching the top. From the observation level, the perspective shifts outward across Mount Vernon Place and beyond, revealing a layered cityscape that combines historic rooftops with more recent development.

At ground level, the museum introduces the monument’s construction, the evolution of the Mount Vernon area, and Washington’s legacy. Digital exhibits provide context without overwhelming detail, allowing visitors to connect the site’s architectural form with its historical meaning. Together, the monument and museum present a clear example of how Baltimore used design and public space to express its place in the early history of the United States.
