Belmontas, Vilnius

Belmontas, Vilnius

Belmontas is a charming suburb of Vilnius, located in the area of Rasos on the right bank of Vilnia River. It is situated to the east of the artistic district of Užupis, which is known for its bohemian atmosphere and numerous galleries, cafes, and restaurants. Originally, Belmontas was a clearing in the woods that surrounded the city of Vilna, and it belonged to the municipal artillery units, together with the nearby cannon foundry of Pūčkoriai.

During the 19th century, a French emigrant built a flour mill on the site and named it Belmont, which is believed to have been inspired by one of several locations in France bearing the same name. The mill operated for some time before being abandoned, and it remained in a state of disrepair for many years.

However, in the early 2000s, the mill was reconstructed and transformed into a popular tourist attraction, restaurant, and hotel. Today, Belmontas offers visitors a unique experience, blending history, nature, and modern amenities. The restaurant serves traditional Lithuanian cuisine and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Guests can also explore the picturesque park, which includes a waterfall and a man-made lake.

Belmontas is a great place for nature lovers and those seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. With its rich history, beautiful scenery, and excellent amenities, it is no surprise that Belmontas has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike.

A tiny isolated area and a former suburb, which now forms part of the Old Town of Vilnius, the Uzupis district is often compared, for its bohemian and laissez-faire atmosphere, to Montmartre of Paris and Freetown Christiania of Copenhagen.
